Winterizing your ElectroStrainer or ClearLine System

As you prepare your vessel for winter storage, it’s important to winterize your ElectroStrainer® or ClearLine® system correctly. Failure to do so may damage your system and void your Warranty.

Option 1: Maintenance Lid (preferred)

In this method, the ElectroStrainer/ClearLine Cell is removed, and the Canister is sealed with a “blank” Maintenance Lid. The empty Canister remains in place during winterization.

  • Purchase a Maintenance Lid: Maintenance Lids may be purchased from your preferred ElectroSea Dealer or directly from ElectroSea.
  • Remove the Cell: Follow the directions provided in the Operation Manual to remove the Cell from the Canister.
  • Store the Cell: Rinse the Cell with fresh water and allow to air dry. Store the Cell in a safe location.
  • Secure the Lid: Leaving the blue Canister Gasket in place, place the Maintenance Lid over the Canister opening and follow the instructions provided in the Operation Manual to secure it in place. Confirm there are no leaks.

Option 2: Temporary Bypass

In this method, the ElectroStrainer/Clearline is temporarily removed from the seawater cooling circuit to prevent glycol solution from contacting the Cell.

  • Modify Plumbing: Plumb a temporarily bypass around the ElectroStrainer or ClearLine Canister.
  • Empty the Canister: Once the bypass is in place, follow the instructions in the Operation Manual to remove the Cell from the Canister.
  • Prepare the Cell: Rinse the Cell with fresh water and allow to air dry. The Cell may be stored in the prepared Canister or in another safe location.
  • Prepare the Canister: Remove any residual water from the interior of the Canister, ClearVis® Flow Sensor or anywhere else freezing water could cause damage.

Important considerations

  • Avoid Chemicals: Never expose the ElectroStrainer or ClearLine Cell to glycol, descaling acids, cleaning chemicals, or any other chemicals. Doing so will void the Warranty.
  • Protect the Cell: Do not touch the Cell plates or use any cleaning tools on them.

Spring re-commissioning

  • Flush System: Before reinstalling the Cell, thoroughly flush the entire seawater circuit with seawater or fresh water for at least five minutes to remove all glycol residue.
  • Reinstall Cell: Once the system is free of glycol, reinstall the Cell following the instructions in the Operation Manual.
