Biofouling requires air conditioners to overwork, shortening their lifespan. According to Barnacle Buster®, “as growth forms inside the condenser coil, heat transfer will be greatly decreased causing efficiency to drop. This will cause the compressor to work much harder, thus increasing amperage draw.”
Barnacle Buster® and RYDLYME® are made of phosphoric acid (<10%) and hydrochloric acid (5-9%). The pH for Barnacle Buster is between 1.0 – 1.25, which means it is considered a "strong acid”. According to RYDLYME®, the descaler “is non-corrosive, but the application of RYDLYME may expose pre-existing under deposit corrosion (pitting, holes or similar damage) that can result in leaks in pipes, equipment or systems.”
